Marist College’s Student Programming Council (SPC), sponsored a trip to the Big Apple to see the new Tony award-winning show, Newsies. Over 100 theatre patrons boarded the buses and headed toward the city to see this new and fantastic production.
Newsies is a 1992 film telling the story of the 1899 Newsboys strike that starred Christian Bale with hit songs such as “Seize the Day”, “King of New York” and “Santa Fe”. In the new adaptation on Broadway, Corey Cott plays the role of Jack Kelly, who is the witty leader of the Newsie boys. The audience meets the zany bunch of Newsies boys who grace the stage with their amazing vocal skills and vivacious dance moves. When the prices of papers get jacked up ten cents, Jack with the support of the rest of the boys, decide to start a strike and form their own union. The show revolves around how these boys make light in the darkness of trying to make a living them with their smiling faces, strong dancing and beautifully sung songs.
The day in the city was fantastic; the bus let us off right outside the theatre and allotted free time to go explore the streets of the NYC. After eating and stopping by the ever so popular cupcake bakery, Crumbs, we headed over to 41st street where we were only minutes away to see this amazing production. Being a huge theatre patron, as well as Newsies being my favorite movie, I was more than pleased with the show; from the vocals to the remarkable choreography to the lighting and staging, the show was definitely a hit. The show had me laughing and crying and come intermission, I was sad to know the show was even half way over.
Leaving the theatre, I could hear audience members humming and singing the tunes that kept their feet tapping the whole show. The show was a hit; sophomore Carli Jurczynski said, “The storyline and singing were captivating, but the dancing blew me away!”. SPC has done such a wonderful job with organizing these trips for the students of Marist. I just can’t wait to see what’s in store for next semester, I definitely wouldn’t mind seeing this one again!
