On Sunday, October 25th, Marist Housing and Residence Hall Councils hosted the 11th annual Gartland Trick or Treat. Over 400 people, including Marist students, faculty, and families from the local families attended the event, its biggest turnout in years.
The event is run by RAs and other Residence Hall Councils who put together all the games and set up activities at the booths. Some of the activities included a costume contest and a house decorating contest. The kids of course had the opportunity to go door to door and trick or treat in Marist’s own Gartland Commons.
Most of the kids who attended may not get the chance to go trick or treating on Halloween. The event gave them the opportunity to dress up in their favorite costume and celebrate Halloween a little early in a safe environment.
The kids were not the only ones who got to have all the fun. The RA’s who put together the event got to have some fun dressing up as well. Erika Hofgesang, a Resident Assistant in Gartland, had a blast dressing up with her staff as the cast of Orange is the New Black. Her favorite part of the day was “hearing the thank you’s from parents who can not take their kids out on Halloween.” Erika felt the event was very rewarding and talked about how, “planning the event we knew it’s something local kids enjoy, but I never realized how many people really rely on Gartland Trick or Treat.”
Overall the event was a huge success. Marist is already looking forward to next year’s annual Gartland Trick or Treat!
