PRSSA gets into the Holiday Spirit

This past Wednesday, the Marist Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) celebrated what can be seen as a great closing to the fall semester here at Marist. PRSSA is a club here at Marist College geared towards students who have an interest in Public Relations and enhances students knowledge within the field by providing them with unique networking opportunities, as well an inside scoop to what is currently happening within the Communication and Public Relation field. This year, the organization was able to take home the star chapter award that was given by PRSSA National at a conference in Indianapolis for the third year in a row!

The organization had a lot of fun Wednesday, as they teamed up with two of the main a capella groups on campus, Time Check and Sirens, and sang Christmas Carols at the local Poughkeepsie Hospital.  President of the Chapter, Nicole Tackley said, “Getting to belt out my favorite Christmas songs with my classmates was the perfect way to kick off the holiday season, but looking around and seeing the big smiles on patients and employees’ faces made it just that much more rewarding! Holidays in a hospital aren’t easy, so the fact that we could brighten everyone’s day a little bit made all of us so happy. We hope to make this a tradition!” After spreading some holiday cheer, the organization held their annual holiday social where members competed for the ugliest sweater, and ate some delicious food catered by Rossi’s, a local Italian deli.

As a current member of PRSSA, I love sense of community and support within our organization. The club has really enhanced my knowledge of the Communication field as well as taught me numerous ways to network, build my resume, write a cover letter, and connect with people that are currently working within the field, including Marist Alumni!

prssaOther events PRSSA has held this year include:

  • Webinar with Marist Alumni and the Public Relations Coordinator at Bed Bath and Beyond!
  • Webinar with Head of Public Relations at Expedia and Former Marist Alum, Tarran Street!
  • “Learn the best methods in working in both Public Relations and Journalism” with Professors Loribeth Greenan, and Professor Lerner, who both work in the Public Relations and Journalism field
  • Meals on Wheels, a successful community service event!
  • Mentor Programs
  • Event Planning Committees
  • Fundraising Committees
  • esPResso, The Marist Public Relations Blogs

Are you interested in Public Relations, and want to join the Marist PRSSA Chapter? Be sure to be on the lookout for signs all around campus for next semester’s meetings!
