Joseph Kopp, a junior here at Marist recently took home the Captain of the Year award at the Marist Ski Team’s final race the Sara Grayson Memorial Race in Londonberry, Vermont. Kopp was able to lead the team with his fellow co-captain Shannon Haggerty, to a unbelievable finish to the winter season.
Some of this year’s highlights included junior, Bill Ryan winning third overall in the race division, allowing him to qualify for regionals. Ryan had the opportunity to compete with some of the top skiers from other schools from the Easter Collegiate Ski Conference; including Castleton, Clarkson, University of Maine, and Babson. In order to qualify for regionals, athletes must place in the top three within their race division, while competing against other schools including Yale, Brandeis, Wesleyan, University of Rhode Island, Vassar and Simmons.
Bill Ryan, was not the only one to have a fantastic season, freshman Griffin Simonds was able to win fourth overall in the male category, which has never been done by a Marist freshman. Shannon Haggerty and Erika Rothman were also able to place within the top ten females competing out of approximately 65 racers. Unbelievable!
About the Marist Ski Team:
The Marist Ski Team was started in 1981 by Shannon Haggerty’s father, and is a group composed of competitive skiers, 10 male and 10 female who have advanced skiing abilities, and exquisite performance. The Marist Ski Team along with schools such as Yale, Brandeis, Wesleyan, University of Rhode Island, Vassar and Simmons make up the McBrine Division. The schools compete at mountains such as West Mountain, Magic Mountain, and many more during the first five weeks of the Spring Semester. The team competes in both Slalom Skiing and Giant Slalom events. Slalom Skiing is an alpine discipline, where the gates are spaced closer together, which require quicker and shorter turns than those competing in Giant Slalom events, whose gates are spaced a bit further apart .
